History of the Lagos State Police Command
Lagos State was created in May, 1967. It is bounded in the North and East by Ogun State, in the West by Republic of Benin and in the South by Atlantic Ocean. Although Lagos state is the smallest state in Nigeria, with an area of 356,861 hectares of which 75,755 hectares are wetlands; it has the highest population of 17, 552,942 citizens.
At Creation, it had four (4) Police Area Commands and twenty-two (22) Police Divisions.At present, it has thirteen (13) Police Area Commands and one hundred and seven (107) Police Divisions. The strength of Police personnel as of date is 30,552.
As at date, thirty-four (34) Commissioners of Police have headed the Command since inception. Five of the Commissioners served when the State was a Federal Territory. They are: I. S. Proud, M. E. K. Roberts, Hamman Maiduguri, P. O. Chude and Theophilus Fagbola; Ag CP Imohimi O. Edgar is the incumbent (current) Commissioner.The longest serving Commissioner is CP James Danbaba (4 years), and the shortest serving Commissioner is CP Ekpo-Udom Udom (4 days).
